Angels – #H4397 *1068a מַלְאָךְ Mal-ak-eem or #G32 ἄγγελος an-gel-os both of these words mean messengers or ones who are sent out. Compare this with #G652 ἀπόστολος a-pos-to-los which also means messenger. Both are sent out by Yahuah to accomplish a specific commission. Angels can only speak the actual words that Yahuah gave them and they act as servants. However, apostles are sent out as ambassadors by Yahuah. They not only speak the words Yahuah gave them but in a manner consistent with their character. Unlike angels, apostles have the authority given by the Messiah.
“It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch.” (Mark 13:34) “And Yahusha came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Ruach haQodesh,’” (Matt. 28:18, 19). This is an authority to take appropriate action by themselves on behalf of Yahuah.
“Praise Yahuah. Praise Yahuah from the heavens: praise Him in the heights. Praise Him, all His angels: praise Him, all His hosts. Praise Him, sun and moon: praise Him, all stars of light. Praise Him, heavens of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. Let them praise the name of Yahuah: for He commanded, and they were created. (Psa. 148:1-5). Angels are created beings along with the sun moon etc.
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of `Elohiym shouted for joy?” (Job 38: 4, 7). This implies that the angels were created some time between Gen. 1:1 and Gen. 1:5. All of Creation was spoken into existence by Yahuah `Elohiym, except man, “Yahuah `Elohiym formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Gen. 2:7) and woman, “He made the rib, which Yahuah `Elohiym had taken from the man, into a woman, and brought her to the man.” (Gen. 2:22) who were formed.
-1-
Angels ARE NOT dead people who have ‘gone to Heaven’.
“If haSatan casts out haSatan, it is divided against itself. How then will its kingdom stand?” (Matt. 12:26). The pronoun his #G846 αὐτός ow-tos can be translated as he, she, it, they, him her etc. Throughout the Renewed Covenant this word is invariably translated as ‘he’. However, it is my belief that all angels are created beings and should be referred to as ‘it’. Yahuah `Elohiym is called ‘Him’ and man, made (not created) in His image, is also referred to as ‘him’. It is part of the satanic deception in which the Accuser wants to be considered as equal to Yahuah. “The unclean spirits, whenever they (αὐτός) saw him, fell down before Him, and cried, ‘You are the Son of Yahuah!’” (Mark 3:11). “Another angel came and stood over the altar, having a golden censer. Much incense was given to it, (αὐτός) that it (αὐτός) should add it to the prayers of all the set apart ones on the golden altar which was before the throne.” (Rev. 8:3). “But when she saw it (Gabri’el αὐτός), she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.” (Luke 1:29). Both good and evil angels (demons, spirits) including arch-angels Gabri’el and Heyl`el (haSatan) are referred to as αὐτός ow-tos.
Throughout the Tanakh מַלְאָךְ mal-ak-eem are referred to as a man (messenger, man, king etc) but I believe that this is so as it is a means of ascribing human attributes to it.
If angels/demons are not gender-specific i.e. androgyne then this may be reflected in the upsurge of gender-neutrality shown by the new definitions of gender fluidity or self-identification. HaSatan wants to usurp Yahuah’s position as having Man made in His image. HaSatan, as an androgynous being would want Man to appear after its image.
Position
Yahuah, having in the past spoken… to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds… ‘Let all the angels of Yahuah worship Him.’” (Heb. 1:1-6). The Messiah was above angels due to His deity.
“For He said to him, ‘Come out of the man, unclean spirit!’” (Mar. 5:8). In Mark’s account of the demon-possessed man in Gadara (Mark 5:1-20), the Master was capable of driving out Legion, a myriad of unclean spirits.
“but chiefly those who walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries; whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not bring a railing judgment against them before Yahuah.” (2 Peter 2:10, 11). There is no doubt that Man was made with inferior strength and power. There are innumerable creatures in Creation that are also stronger and more powerful, but clearly are not considered above Man.
“For you have made him a little lower than `Elohiym, And crowned him with glory and honour.” (Psa. 8:5). Syriac and Jewish tradition and subsequently the Septuagint and through the Greek and Vulgate translations, some English translations have the word ‘God’ translated as ‘angels’. The word is #H430 *93c אֱלֹהִים el-oh-heem and not #H4397 *1068a מַלְאָךְ mal-ak-eem. This verse is quoted in Heb. 2:7 and is invariably translated as ‘angels’ #G32 ἄγγελος angelos. This reveals Man was the pinnacle of Creation, above angels but just below Yahuah `Elohiym.
-2-
“Do you not know that we shall judge angels?” (1 Cor. 6:3). See (aii) below.
“What is man, that you think of him? The son of man, that you care for him? For you have made him a little lower than `Elohiym” (Psa. 8:4, 5a). The Psalmist refers to Man as being made ‘little below `Elohiym. This refers back to, “`Elohiym created man in His own image. In `Elohiym’s image He created him; male and female He created them.” (Gen. 1:27) where `Elohiym is always considered to be the set Apart Trinity. Briggs (Psalms Vol. I – ICC) suggests that the `Elohiym of Psa. 8:5a is a combination of the Trinity and angels. I cannot find in any commentary where ‘`Elohiym’ is a committee using a third party, such as angels. In fact, according to Rawlinson (Psalms Vol. I – Pulpit Commentary), there is not a single use of `Elohiym in the Tanakh (Old Testament) that is translated as angels. Therefore, Man was made a ‘little below the Yah-head’ and but with the Divine nature.
“…And crowned him with glory and honour.” (Psa. 8:5b). Man is described as having been crowned with glory and honour having dominion over all of creation. This cannot refer to eternal the Messiah as it is clear that the passage refers to Man who was made.
Sha`ul quotes Psa. 8.5 in Heb. 2:7 taken from the Septuagint (LXX). As most of the bible translations are derived from LXX, it is not surprising that they refer to `Elohiym as angels. Rawlinson states that all such translations cannot be considered as critically correct. It has been said that the Hebrew translators compiling LXX looked at Psa. 8:5 and thought it too boastful to position Man so close to `Elohiym so used the Greek ‘angelos’ as the translation for `Elohiym.
“But we see Him who has been made a little lower than the angels, Yahusha, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour, that by the grace of `Eloah He should taste of death for everyone.” (Heb. 2:9). Here is the word ‘angels’ used again, but this is not a direct quote from the Tanakh. This second use is a direct result of the first (mis-) quote of Psa. 8:5a. Here the inspired writer describes the Messiah Yahusha in the exact terms the Psalmist talks of Man, being crowned with honour and glory. Sha`ul tells of the Messiah Yahusha being made below the angels for a little while.
“Have this in your mind, which was also in the Messiah Yahusha, who, existing in the form of `Elohiym, did not consider it robbery to be equal with `Elohiym, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, He humbled Himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.” (Phil. 2:5-8). Nowhere in the entire Scripture, is there any confirmation that the Messiah Yahusha made Himself lower than the angels. Therefore, either Shau`ul was not writing under the inspiration of HaRuach or that our understanding of Sha`ul’s words is incorrect. Personally, I choose the latter scenario.
To the Assembly at Phillipi, Sha`ul that the Master was made a little below `Elohiym. In other words, He set aside His divine nature in order that He would take upon Himself the nature of Man in every way, in order that He could suffer death, “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.” (Heb. 4:15). The reference to the High Priest is of Yahusha HaMashiach. ‘All’ points #G3956 πᾶς pass – each, every, any, all. This shows that the Messiah had in Him every attribute that was in man, and man had every attribute that was in the Messiah.
-3-
If this was not so, the Adversary would be justified in claiming that the Messiah Yahusha could not be the Advocate and Redeemer of all Mankind., “For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, since a death has occurred for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, that those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.” (Heb. 9:15), as that which the Messiah had that Man had not, would keep Him from sinning. Likewise, that the Messiah could not be the Perfect Example for Man to aspire.
This includes the ability to sin, “The devil said to Him, ‘I will give you all this authority, and their glory, for it has been delivered to me; and I give it to whomever I want. If you therefore will worship before me, it will all be yours.’” (Luke 4:6, 7). It would only be for a short while, the period of His Incarnation, because Yahuah raised Him up after His death.
It has been said that, at the Fall, Man’s status went from a position above the angels to one that was below them, surrendering this position to haSatan, this being rectified by the New Birth. However, again, this cannot be supported by Scripture and causes a paradox. How can angels (Matt. 26:53) and demons (fallen angels) (Mark 3:11) be subject to Him? If the Master was in every way as Mankind, how come haSatan could not force Him to worship it?
“Are they (angels) not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” (Heb. 1:14). “You shall fear Yahuah your `Elohiym and serve Him, And shall take oaths in His name.” (Deut. 6:13). Angels were created to serve Yahuah `Elohiym and to Man; Man was made to serve Yahuah `Elohiym only.
“And when He had called unto Him His twelve disciples, He gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.” (Matt. 10:1). The Master demonstrated on many occasions that He was superior
to the fallen angels, even in His humbled humanity. The Master had been given authority by Father and, as He was so far above the angels, He could convey His authority onto Man who, in turn, could command angels.
Therefore, if the Messiah became as Man then in His humanity Messiah was, with Man, superior to the angels.
Classification of Angels
(i) Sons of `Elohiym
“For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of `Eloah, because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of decay into the glorious liberty of the children of `Eloakh.” (Rom. 19, 21).
“Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of HaRuach, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.” (Rom. 8:23). The sons of Yahuah will be adopted and their bodies along with the rest of Creation will take place on Judgement Day.
“Now there was a day when the sons of `Elohiym came to present themselves before Yahuah, and haSatan also came among them.” (Job 1:6). This is a reference to angels that have found favour in the presence of Yahuah. HaSatan (see haSatan section below) is not
-4-
one of the sons as it is mentioned as well as the sons. There may have been one day in the heavenly calendar that all angels presented themselves before Yahuah to give account of their actions (Delitzsch 1966). HaSatan is named specifically as the chief of the fallen angels and is permitted into the presence of Yahuah `Elohiym as a type of the relationship between their respective servants Yahusha and Yahudas.
“Say to them: ‘Whoever of all your descendants throughout your generations, who goes near the set apart things which the children of Yisra`el dedicate to Yahuah, while he has uncleanness upon him, that person shall be cut off from My presence: I am Yahuah.” (Lev. 22:3). It has always been assumed that when the sons of `Elohiym came into the presence of Yahuah, that the scene mentioned was taking place in Heaven. However, as can be seen from this verse, it can also mean to come into His Presence in a state of worship (and likewise prayer, repentance or assembly). Similarly, the phrase ‘a day’ referred to a specific date. This day may well have been any Shabbat, but the scene took place on one particular Shabbat. The sons of `Elohiym can then be thought of as being righteous men and women.
“that the sons of `Elohiym saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.” (Gen. 6:2). This reference to the Sons of Yahuah `Elohiym cannot refer to angels. Angels are spiritual beings and do not have the ability to pro-create. This passage does not have any other reference to angels and this meaning only forces the interpretation to accommodate tradition. The Sons of Yahuah more probably refers to those righteous men who have found favour in Yahuah’s sight and became men of renown as opposed to non-righteous men taking wives. However, if this was the case, the passage would swing from righteousness to sin without clarification.
One argument against the Sons as being angels is that Mankind and not angels were punished. However, the precedent for punishment being metered out to ‘a morally irresponsible agent was recognized in Hebrew jurisprudence (Gen. 9:5; Exod. 21:28)’ (Skinner 1912). The first incidence of this is found in Gen. 3:14, 15 where the serpent was cursed for its part in the fall of Man. It may be that the serpent creature was possessed by haSatan due to some lack or lapse of moral judgement. This could well fit into the traditional idea that there was some form of communion between angels and Mankind albeit not of a sexual nature. If some men and women were morally lax allowing possession by evil spirits then this may be the instigation of sexual deviance amongst man, giving rise to a general spread of the license to sin. Judgement was then brought down upon the offspring, not of angels and women, but between sexually immoral men and women as a result of demonic influences.
“And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And Yahuah `Elohiym saw that it was good. And Yahuah `Elohiym made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And Yahuah `Elohiym saw that it was good. And Yahuah `Elohiym blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.’ So Yahuah `Elohiym created man in His own image; in the image of Yahuah `Elohiym He created him; male and female He created them. Then Yahuah `Elohiym blessed them, and Yahuah `Elohiym said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply…’” (Gen. 1: 12, 22, 27, 28a). All living creatures and plants were given the ability to pro-create unlike the rest of Creation (sun, moon, stars etc). Angels are spiritual beings, forming a part of this
-5-
latter category and do not have the ability to pro-create. The passage Gen. 6:1-7 does not have any other reference to angels and this meaning only forces the interpretation to accommodate tradition. The sons of `Elohiym more probably refers to those righteous men who have found favour in Yahuah sight and became men of renown as opposed to non-righteous men taking wives. However, if this was the case, the passage would swing from righteousness to sin without clarification.
There are several other arguments against the Sons as being angels:
(a) “Do you not know that we shall judge angels?…” (1 Cor. 6:3). Sha’ul says that all of Yahuah’s Set Apart Believers (sanctified ones or saints) will rule over the angels in eternity future. If Believers are to judge angels, they cannot be angels themselves. Therefore, those Believers who have gone onto Glory cannot become angels.
(b) “For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham,” (Heb. 2:16). The phrases ‘seed of Abraham’, saints, Believers, co-heirs etc. all refer to Mankind and can be interchanged with Sons of `Elohiym.
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of Yahuah `Elohiym shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4, 7). This reference to ‘sons’ can only mean angels. Therefore, according to Occram’s Razor – the simplest of several hypotheses is always the best in accounting for unexplained facts (www.thefreedictionary.com) – ‘sons’ can be either people or angels. This is best explained by Gesenius’ Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon as ‘3) a subject rendering obedience to a king or father’ (www.blueletterbible.org). ‘Sons of `Elohiym are those who are obedient to Yahuah.
(ii) Good angels
“A fiery stream issued, And came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, And the books were opened.” (Dan. 7:10). The number of good angels represent a vast host literally myriads upon myriads.
(a) Kerubim – #H3742 *1036 כְּרוּב ke-roov the etymology of the word is unknown but tradition has it coming from to cover or to guard.
“So He drove out the man; and He placed kerubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.” (Gen. 3:24).
“And the kerubim shall stretch out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and they shall face one another; the faces of the kerubim shall be toward the mercy seat.” (Exod. 25:20). Tradition states that keruvim are concerned with justice, might, history and prophecy.
“Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, ‘Thus says the Yahuah `Elohiym… Because you have set your heart as the heart of a god… Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty… You were in Eden, the garden of Yahuah `Elohiym… You were the anointed keruv who covers… And I destroyed you, O covering cherub,’” (Ezek. 28:2-16). This is the portrait of haSatan. Although this passage describes haSatan as a keruv, it is traditionally considered as being created to lead the heavenly worship.
“You, son of man, take a sharp sword, as a barber’s razor shall you take it to you, and shall cause it to pass on your head and on your beard: then take balances to weigh and
-6-
divide the hair.” (Eze. 5:1). The word חֶרֶב #2719 khe-rev is from the same root as כְּרוּב keruv (Chartrand). This could indicate that the means of wielding this ‘sword’ will be keruvim.
(b) Seraphim – #H8314 שָׂרָף sa-raf 2) seraph, seraphim a) majestic beings with six wings, human hands and voices in attendance upon Yahuah. *2292b seraph considered to be a symbol of heavenly purity and power as they resemble a flame.
“I saw Yahuah sitting on a throne…Above it stood seraphim…Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in its hand a live coal… And touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Behold, this has tiuched your lips; Your iniquity is taken away, And your sin purged’” (Isa. 6:1, 2, 6, 7). The seraphim’s position is in attendance to Yahuah, leading heavenly worship and service. They are concerned with holiness.
(c) Living Creatures – #G2226 ζῷον zo-on.
“Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of Yahuah `Elohiym who lives forever and ever.” (Rev. 15:7). These creatures are heavenly beings that direct Yahuah judgements.
(d) Living Beings – #H2416 חַי kheye
“Out of the midst of it came the likeness of four living beings. This was their appearance; they had the likeness of man. Each one had four faces and four wings…straight legs…claves feet…colour of burnished bronze…hands of a man under each wing…each had face of a man…lion…ox…eagle.” (Eze. 1:5-10). These were used specifically to bear Yahuah’s chariot in Yechezki`el. (Chartrand).
(e) Watchers – #H5894 * עִיר 2907 ear.
“I saw in the visions of my head while on my bed, and there was a watcher, a set apart one, coming down from heaven.” (Dan. 4:13). These were the angels probably most in contact with mankind.
“But to which of the angels has He ever said: ‘Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool’? Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” (Heb. 1:13, 14). This class of angels is involved with the day-to-day affairs of mankind.
(f) Archangels – #G743 ἀρχάγγελος ar-khan-ge-los – chief of the angels.
There is a hierarchy within the heavenly beings but the details are not certain. However, the archangels appear to be the highest order. The number of this order is also unknown but there are extra-biblical references to seven. The apocryphal Ancient Book of Enoch (Johnson) mentions archangels and the most common are Miyka`el (Who Is Like `El), Gabri`el (Man Of `El), Uri`el ( El Is My Light), Rapa`el (El Heals), Ragu`el (Friend Of El), Zari`el (Secret Of `El) and some variants refer to Remi`el (Mercy of `El). There is also the name of the chief of the fallen angels, Heyl`el (shining One Of `El).
“But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Miyka`el, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia.” (Dan. 10:13). Dani`el describes Miyka`el as being one of the chief of princes and tradition has it that Miyka`el is both the military chief (prince) of the hosts (angelic army) of heaven and, in particular, protector of Yisra`el.
-7-
“Yet Miyka`el the archangel, in contending with the devil, when it disputed about the body of Moshe, dared not bring against it a reviling accusation, but said, ‘Yahuah rebuke you!’” (Jude 1:9). Even though Miyka`el had great authority amongst the angels it still respected haSatan’s position. Rather than fall into the sin of slandering (the meaning of devil) haSatan, it rebuked haSatan in the Name of the Messiah.
(iii) Fallen/evil angels/demons
(a) Bound angels – there are two types of bondage of fallen angels:
(1) Permanent – “For if Yahuah did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;” (2 Peter 2:4). The word ‘hell’ #G5020 ταρταρόω Tar-tar-ro-oh is the equivalent to #G1067 γέεννα Gay-e-nah. It is the place of utter darkness and is referred to by Homer as the place beneath Sheol #H7585 *2303c שְׁאוֹל (Sheh-ool). Once an angel is cast down into Tar-tar-ro-oh, there is no escape and goes directly from here to the lake of fire and brimstone of for eternal punishment.
(2) Temporary – “and it (angel) cast it (haSatan) into the bottomless pit, and shut it up, and set a seal on it, so that it should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things it must be released for a little while.” (Rev. 20:3). The word ‘pit’#G12 ἄβυσσος A-boo-sos is the equivalent to She`ol and is the place of temporary confinement for haSatan and all the unbelieving dead. HaSatan is released for a sort time but is eventually called to judgement along with all of humanity. (See further haSatan below).
(b) Free angels – most commonly referred to as demons.
Each demon has a specified job in differing malignancy such as hate, lust, addiction and will roam from victim to victim when the host is of no longer use i.e. upon death.
“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you accursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and its angels.’” (Matt. 25:41). No matter how long the angels roam for, there is an eternal punishment awaiting them.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom it may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8). HaSatan is the chief of the demons. This angel wants to supplant Yahuah however, as much as the lies would lead people to believe, the Adversary is not omnipresent. It is imperative for people not to credit Yahuah -like attributes to haSatan. When people talk of being attacked by the devil, if it can only be in one place at a time, it is unlikely that the person is actually being attacked by the devil. It is possible (and quite probable) that the person is being attacked by a demon. (See further haSatan below).
(1) Gods #H430 אֱלֹהִים `elohiym
“Now, you want to be gone because you yearned after your father’s house, but why have you stolen my gods?” (Gen. 31:30). The gods here are idols, graven images of demons or terafim.
(2) Guiborim – This is the demonic equivalent of archangels.
“He asked it, ‘What is your name?’ It said to Him, ‘My name is Legion, for we are many.” (Mark 5:9). Guiborim is a higher level of demon in charge of hundreds or thousands of lesser demons. These are demons that are only sated by blood sacrifices. (Chartrand).

Work of angels
(i) Good angels
(a) In the life and ministry of Yahusha: “…And having come in, the angel said to her (Miryam), ‘Rejoice, highly favoured one, Yahuah is with you; blessed are you among women!… And the angel answered and said to her, “Ruach haQodesh will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that the One who is to be born will be called the Son of Yahuah.” (Luke 1:26-38). Gabri`el is sent to Miryam to announce the miraculous birth of the Messiah Yahusha.
“But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of Yahuah appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Yosef, son of Dawid, do not be afraid to take to you Miryam your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of HaRuach.’” (Matt. 1:20). An angel (probably Gabri`el) re-assures Yosef of Miryam’s immaculate conception.
“Then the angel said to them (shepherds), ‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people…’” (Luke 2: 10-15). An angel (again probably Gabri`el) announces Yahusha’s birth to the shepherds followed by a host of angels glorifying Yahuah.
“Then an angel appeared to Him (Yahusha) from heaven, strengthening Him.” (Luke 22:43). An angel is sent down to the Gat-Shemanim (Gethsemane) to comfort Yahusha in the moment of testing.
“Or do you think that I cannot pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matt. 26:53). A multitude of angels are waiting to be sent to aid the Messiah in answer to prayer.
“And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of Yahuah descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it… And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galil; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.” (Matt. 28: 2-9). An angel is sent to roll away the stone from the Messiah’s tomb and to announce His resurrection.
“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.” (Matt. 25:31). The Messiah will return to earth with the angelic host.
(b) In general: “But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, ‘Let all the angels of Yahuah worship Him.’” (Heb. 1:6). The angels stand before Yahuah and worship Him in both praise and service.
“But at night an angel of Yahuah opened the prison doors and brought them out…” (Acts 5:19). Angels are sent to rescue Believers.
“And they (the two angels) struck the men who were at the doorway of the (Lot’s) house with blindness…” (Gen. 19:11a). Angles are sent to protect Believers.
-9-
“Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” (Heb. 1:14). Angels are sent to serve Believers. “The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.” (Rev. 1:20). Again, angels are sent to serve a specific group of Believers.
“and behold, Miyka`el, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia. Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days yet to come.” (Dan. 10:13, 14). Dani`el was praying for his (and Yahuah’s) people currently in exile and must have asked what was to become of the Yisra`elites and Yerushalayim. The archangel Miyka`el was sent out to help the archangel Gabri`el who was in turn sent out to encourage Dani`el when he prayed for Yisra`el and to show and explain what was to happen.
“Then I said, ‘My master, what are these?’ So the angel who talked with me said to me, ‘I will show you what they are.” (Zec. 1:9). Angels were sent by Yahuah to show His will prior to giving of the Set Apart Spirit.
“For we will destroy this place, because of the outcry against them has grown great before the face of Yahuah and Yahuah has sent us to destroy it.” (Gen. 19:13). Part of the commission of the two angels was to destroy S’dom. “Then I heard a loud voice from the Temple saying to the seven angels. ‘Go and pour out the bowls of the Wrath of Yahuah on the earth.’” (Rev. 16:1). “The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His Kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” (Matt. 14:41, 42). Angels are sent to administer Yahuah `Elohiym’s judgements.
“And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” (Matt. 24:31). At the End Times, angels will be sent out to bring Believers in heaven to the Messiah immediately prior to His return.
“Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Yisra`el:” (Rev. 21:12). There is an honorary guard at the twelve gates of New Yerushalayim. The grammar is not clear as to the exact number of angels. There could be one angel per gate (total twelve) or twelve per gate (total one hundred and forty-four). If it is the former, then it may be possible that each angel was the specific guardian of a tribe of Yisra`el. Num. 2:1-24 shows the individual tribes lining up in a specific orientation around the Tabernacle during the wilderness travels.
(ii) Fallen angels/demons/unclean spirits
For the works of haSatan specifically, see below.
The work of demons can easily be summed up by saying their whole purpose is to separate Man from Yahuah. This can take many forms; physical, mental and emotionally but the greatest attack is the lie that when things get bad Yahuah does not want anything to do with the person. It is the prospect of rejection or the lack of hope that is the most difficult to bear
-10-
as it seems that the person must carry the burden alone. It must be stressed, however, that not all illness, infirmity etc. are the result of demonic attack.
(a) Demonic oppression: B. Although Believers cannot be possessed, they can, and most probably will, be oppressed; not all oppressed are possessed but all who are possessed are also oppressed.
Demonic oppression – is temporary and operates from without. Believers can only suffer from this form of attack. Although it is of a temporary nature, the effects can be long-lasting. Believers should be aware of the possibility of attack and constantly on guard, donning the full armour of Yahuah (Eph. 6:11-18) and never to ‘remove’ it. (For further details refer to Maxi Bible Study Spiritual Warfare – First Generation Assembly).
“When Yahusha heard that, He said to them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.’” (Matt. 9:12). The Master said of Himself that He came that we may all be made whole, physically, mentally and spiritually.
“Now may our Master the Messiah Yahusha Himself, and our Yahuah our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace,” (2 Thess. 2:16). Sha`ul also taught that there is eternal consolation through the Messiah Yahusha. “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for Yahuah your `Elohiym, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” (Deut. 31:6).
“but the prince of the Kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Miyak’el, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia.” (Dan. 10:13). Demons are sent to oppose the work of good angels.
“And war broke out in heaven: Miyka’el and its angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and its angels fought,” (Rev. 12:7). Demons assist haSatan in trying to destroy Yahuah’s people. Again, this verse shows that the archangel Miyka’el is implicitly involved with this battle strengthening the case for this archangel to be traditionally acknowledged as the angelic leader of Yahuah hosts.
“Now HaRuach expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,” (1 Tim. 4:1). Demons are sent to spread false doctrines at best, casting doubt in people’s minds and at worst, leading people away from the truth. “This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.” (James 3:15). Not only do demons spread false doctrine but actively oppose godly wisdom.
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Eph. 6:12). Demons are sent to oppose the progress of Believers. However, it is necessary for all Believers to take an active role in this battle.
“For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of Yahuah `Elohiym.” (Rev. 16:14). Demons are capable of working miracles so Believers must be aware of this possibility and weigh everything they see or hear according to the Word of Yahuah.
-11-
“But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; so the magicians of Mtizrayim, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But `Aharon’s rod swallowed up their rods.” (Exod. 7:11). The miracles are only a counterfeit and cannot stand up to the power of Yahuah as shown by `Aharon’s rod/serpent eating those of Pharaoh’s magicians. HaSatan has set up a counterfeit system whereby haSatan/magicians/demons are instead of Yahuah /Believers/ angels.
“Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to Yahuah, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons.” (1 Cor. 10:20). Demons are sent to oppose godly fellowship. Believers must take care as to the sort of company they keep. This is not to say that Believers should shun non-believers, Heaven forbid, as this is exactly what the Master did in His Ministry and that we are called to carry on in His work. However, Believers must be aware that demonic influence is subtle (as the serpent in Gan Eden) and can be used to draw Believers away from the fellowship with Yahuah through Messiah Yahusha and any godly influence and back into a lifestyle of sin.
(b) Demonic possession – is permanent (without divine intervention) and operates from within. The effects of possession last as long as the unclean spirit dwells within its host. “Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, and blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw.” (Matt. 12:22). Demon possession can take the form of both physical and/or mental disorders. “And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up.” (Luke 13:11). Unclean spirits can cause various illnesses and deformities. These can alcoholism, drug (both narcotic and prescription) addiction, bulimia gambling and immorality and sexual deviance. I am not saying that all people with these illnesses are sick as a result of demonic possession. It is my belief that the tendency of heavy drinkers towards alcoholism lowers both the physical and mental capability to withstand attacks that result in possession. Likewise, for any condition that reduces a person’s self-control, leads a person wide open to possession.
“The lamp of the body is in the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.” (Luke 11:34). Here the Master warns that evil may overtake some people and it is usually via the senses that possession occurs with sight being the most likely. “that the sons of Yahuah saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.” (Gen. 6:2). The senses are used to lead the unwary into sexual immorality and depravation eventually ending in demonic possession. As with sickness, this is a permanent condition until released by the power of Yahuah.
“For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed.” (Acts 8:7). An all-to-often method of demonic attack is in the possession of people. It is my belief that demons can only possess unsaved people. The indwelling of the Set Apart Spirit is so strong, even in a new Believer, a demon cannot take up residence.
“So all the demons begged Him saying, ‘Send us into the swine, that we may enter them.’” (Mark 5:12). With no indwelling Set Apart Ruach, animals are just as capable of
-12-
being possessed by demons as humans. It is my belief that this was the case at the Fall of Man in Gen. 3 within haSatan possessing the serpent.
Finally, not all demonic attack is at the command of haSatan, “Yahuah sent a spirit of ill will between Avimeleckh and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shekhem dealt treacherously with Avimeleckh,” (Jud. 9:23). Demons, as is all of Creation, are subject to the commands of Yahuah and can be the agents of Yahuah’s punishment. In fact, some Jewish tradition regards haSatan as an agent going about commissioned by Yahuah as shown in the Book of Job, “Yahuah said to haSatan, ‘Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself do not put forth your hand.’ So haSatan went forth from the presence of Yahuah.” (Job 1:12).
Demonology
This is generally the term for the study of demons but can be used specifically in the following groups where man is actively seeking the help of demons:
(i) Fortune-telling – this is the lowest level and can take the form of deception or superstition. In many civilizations augury or fortune-telling was done by ‘interpreting’ natural signs such as flights of birds, entrails, bones etc.
(a) Scrying – looking into a clear, translucent or reflective substance to determine future events. Hydromancy is a specific form of scrying using the appearance of water in a vessel (the crystal ball of common use is a transportable and readily available substitute for water used by fortune-tellers or scivers). Other forms are when objects are dropped into water (e.g. tea leaves), Lecanomancy (oil on water) and psychomancy (mirror-gazing).
(b) Theriomancy – the observation and interpretation of natural events such as bird movements.
(c) Bibliomancy – consultation of a book such as I Ching.
(d) Cleromancy – interpretation of the casting of lots such as bones, runes or tarot cards.
(e) Somatomancy – interpretations of bodily signs such as scapultimancy (shoulder blades).
(f) Geomancy – observation and interpretation of the ground or casting of earth or sand.
(g) Aeromancy – observation of and interpretation of atmospheric conditions (e.g. cloud shape and movements).
(h) Pyromancy – observation and interpretation of flames, usually with a substance thrown into the flame to enhance the effect.
(i) Astrology – observation and interpretation of the influences of celestial objects (e.g. zodiacs, birth charts). (“You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels; Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, and the monthly prognosticators stand up and save you from what shall come upon you.” (Isa. 47:13)).
(j) Phrenomancy – the interpretation of dreams. “If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods’—which you have not known—‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for Yahuah your `Elohiym is testing you to know whether you love the Yahuah your `Elohiym with all your heart and with all your soul… then you shall inquire, search out, and ask diligently. And if it is indeed true and certain that such an abomination was committed among you, you shall surely strike…” (Deut. 13:1-3, 14, 15a).
-13-
The way to counter such deceit is to weigh up all what is said and done and compare it to the Word of Yahuah (as indicated on the very first page of this discussion).
(ii) Demon worship – this can take the form of sacrifice to demons. “They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons,” (Psa. 106:37). Here, children are offered up to ‘appease’ or seek favour from demons. “Observe Yisra`el after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?” (1 Cor. 10:18). Food may also be offered up and the warning is that eating of the remains of the sacrifice is considered as being part of the worshipers offering up the original sacrifice. These may be considered as an evil parody of the sacrificial offerings of Leviticus that all point to “who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.” (Heb. 7:27). “So they worshipped the dragon that gave authority to the beast; and they worshipped the beast…” (Rev. 13:4a). During the End times there will be a marked renewal of demon worship culminating in the overt worship of haSatan.
(iii) Spiritualism/spiritism – this is the living communicating with the dead using a living medium or articles such as Ouija boards. “Also he (Manasseh) made his son pass through the fire, practiced soothsaying, used witchcraft, and consulted spiritualists and mediums. He did much evil in the sight of Yahuah, to provoke Him to anger.” (2 Kgs. 21:6). Other references include the possessed seer girl, “It happened, as we were going to prayer, that a certain girl having a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by fortune telling.” (Acts 16:16) and the Witch of Endor, “Then said Sha’ul to his servants, ‘Seek me a woman who has a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her.’ His servants said to him, ‘Behold, there is a woman who has a familiar spirit at En-dor.’” (1 Sam. 28:7).
(iv) Sorcery – this is using demonic powers to manipulate natural events or objects. “But Paroh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.” (Exod. 7:11). “And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived.” (Rev. 13:14). “For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” (Matt. 24:24). These are counterfeits of Yahuah’s power in the performing of miracles and are intended to lead astray both non-Believers and Believers.
(v) Invocation – this is the interaction of a person summoning or calling-up demons and the demon itself. The summoner is under the allusion that the person controls the demon but in reality, it is the demon controlling the person. The summoner interacts with the demon:
(a) Clergy – through symbology and ritual by calling upon a specific named demon.
(b) Geomancy – through the use of earth, crystals and stones (reiki?).
(c) Hermeticism – through symbology, numerology and ritual (pentancles).
(d) Monsai – through art (music, song, dance, verse) using emotional energy (Tai Chi, Kung Fu, yoga, popular and rock music/druid beat).
(e) Necromancy – through the use of essences and other corporeal materials taken off recently dead animals (including humans) or plants.
(f) Shamanism – through organic chemistry and ritual (cannabis, magic mushrooms).
-14-
(g) Technomancy – through the use of technology and technological processes
(LSD, heroin, cocaine, crystal meth.) (http://paradoxrpg.wikispaces.com)
HaSatan
(i) Name
One name for the ‘bad’ archangel is called Heyl`el Son of Dawn (Latin Lucifer Shining One) referring to the planet Venus. This demon was cast out of Heaven. Each class of angel has a chief and tradition has it that Heyl`el is the chief of the fallen angels. All other names that this demon is known by is actually a description or operation. For simplicity, this angel will be referred to as haSatan (the Adversary) which is the most common ‘name’ associated with this demon.
Another name of this demon is Sama`el (Severity of `El, angel of death and destruction). This name is used in Jewish occultism and in the Chronicles of Jerahmee, a 14th. Century apocryphical book (The Mystica.com). It is considered as the Chief of all the satans and is not an enemy of Yahuah. In fact, like all other angels haSatan, is only an agent of Yahuah. As such, haSatan is actually the ‘friend’ of mankind, not its enemy. “Yahuah of hosts, Him you shall sanctify; Let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread. He will be as a sanctuary, but a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, as a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Yerushalayim.” (Isa. 8:13, 14). This block is put in a person’s way so that in overcoming adversity the person is strengthened and causes the person to grow. The prophet Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) quite clearly states that Yahuah Ts`va`ot is the stumbling block and not one of His agents.
It is common to use a title or job description as a name.
(a) HaSatan – #H7854 שָׂטָן sa-tan – from a primary root meaning to attack (fig.) or accuser, to be an adversary or opponent, to resist or withstand.
Satan #G4567 Σατανᾶς sa-tan-as – (transliteration from Hebrew) remote from the truth, accusation, hostility. HaSatan is both the adversary to man and to Yahuah. “But if you indeed obey His voice and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.” (Exod. 23:22).
(1) “You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you. You were on the set apart mountain of Yahuah and you walked back and forth in the midst of the fiery stones. You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created until iniquity was found in you.” (Ezek. 28: 14, 15). HaSatan was created to serve Yahuah in Heaven. “not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.” (1 Tim. 3:6).
(2) “Now is the judgment of this world. Now the prince of this world will be cast out.”(John 12:31). “And He said to them, ‘I saw haSatan fall like lightning from heaven.’” (Luke 10:18). Yahuah cast out haSatan from His presence.
(3) “He seized the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and haSatan, that deceives the whole inhabited world, and bound it for a thousand years,” (Rev. 20:2).
-15-
(4) “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” (Rev. 20:10).
These four verses represent the stages of the fall of haSatan.
(b) Devil – #G1228 διάβολος dee-ab-oh-los – false accuser, slanderer.
“For Yahuah `Elohiym knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like Yahuah `Elohiym, knowing good and evil.” (Gen. 3:5). The devil slanders Yahuah to man with a mixture of truth, half-lies and lies. “So haSatan answered the Yahuah and said, ‘Does Iyov fear Yahuah for nothing?’” (Job 1:9). Here, haSatan slanders man to Yahuah.
(c) Accuser –#G2723 κατηγορέω kat-ay-gor-ay-oh
“Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, ‘Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our `Eloah, and the power of His Messiah have come, for the accuser of our brethren, that accused them before our `Eloah day and night, has been cast down.” (Rev. 12:10). Here the word ‘accuser’ is not false accusations, as haSatan is giving what is probably an accurate account of a person’s sins. It has been said that haSatan is a very ‘good’ devil as it is committed day and night to the work of separating man from Yahuah.
(d) Dragon – #G1404 δράκων dra-kone
“So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, that deceives the whole world; it was cast to the earth, and its angels were cast out with it.” (Rev. 12:9).
(e) Snake – #G3789 ὄφις o-fiece
“But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Kheva by its craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in the Messiah.” (2 Cor. 11:3). The serpent is an ancient global symbol of cunning and deceit.
(f) Wicked – #G955 Βελίαλ be-lee-l
Also meaning worthless, base, destruction.
“And what accord has the Messiah with Belial? Or what part has a Believer with an unbeliever?” (2 Cor. 6:15). Most of the TaNaKh references are associated with wicked people being termed children of Belial. The above verse has the Messiah in direct opposition to Belial/haSatan.)
(g) Troubler- #G4190 πονηρός pon-ay-ros
“When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the troubler one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside. (Matt. 13:19). The wicked one is out to do evil whenever possible as it is the bringer of troubles and hardship.
(h) Tempter – #G3985 πειράζω pie-rad-zo
“For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our labour might be in vain.” (1 Thess. 3:5). In enticing man to sin, haSatan is trying to put the sin-barrier between Yahuah and man.
-16-
(i) God – #G2316 θεός thay-os – a deity
“whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the Good News of the glory of the Messiah, who is the image of `Eloah, should shine on them.” (2 Cor. 4:4). The god of this world (or age) sponsors the religion of natural man and has servants, “But thanks be to `Eloah, that, whereas you were bondservants of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching whereunto you were delivered.” (Rom. 6:17); doctrines, “But HaRuach says expressly that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,” (1 Tim. 4:1); sacrifices, “But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to `Eloah, and I do not desire that you would have communion with demons.” (1 Cor. 10:20) and synagogues, “I know your works, oppression, and your poverty (but you are rich), and the blasphemy of those who say they are Yehudim, and they are not, but are a synagogue of haSatan.” (Rev. 2:9). This is the counterfeit religion in opposition to the true religion of Yahuah. This verse highlights the difficulty in calling Yahuah ‘God’ as both god and God is the same word in Greek.
(j) Ruler – #G758 ἄρχων arkh-hone – prince, chief, commander
“Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.” (John 12:31). This is the leader, commander of the fallen angels in the heavenly warfare. Yahusha does not dispute the rightful claim of haSatan to this world (Matt. 4:8) but Yahuah has set definite limits to both haSatan’s power and time.
(k) King – #H4428 מֶלֶךְ me-lek
“Son of man, take up a lamentation for the King of Tyre, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Yahuah `Elohiym… You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you…’” (Eze. 28:12a, 14a). The physical ruler of the Tyre was called a prince (Eze. 28:2) but it would seem that he was under the strong influence (possession) of the spiritual ruler; a prince is always subservient to a king. *1199a melek would refer to any person, male or female, that has a role of authority such as king, queen, lord, magistrate, governor or chieftain.
(l) Lord – בַּעַל #H1167 Ba-ale
“So Yisra`el was joined to Ba`al of Peor, and the anger of Yahuah was aroused against Yisra`el.” (Num. 25:3). As with ix) ‘God’ above, the word lord has a neutral meaning either of the One True Deity or of the multitudes of false deities. It is my opinion that the use of neutral terms should not be used of Yahuah or Yahusha but kept for the false ‘gods’. Ba`al is used both in the names of places and of people both good and wicked. *262a ba`al owner, possessor, husband as well as the name of a false deity. If it is taken to mean ‘owner’ then it has the connotation of the deity owning the souls of Man and therefore in order for salvation to come, each soul must be bought or ransomed by Another.
(1) Lord of the Flies (Chald.) – #H1176 בַּעַל זְבוּב Ba’al Ze-voov Lord of Dung (Aram.) “Then he said to him, ‘Thus says the Yahuah: ‘Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Ba`al-Zevoov, the god of Ekron, …’” (2 Kgs. 1:16). *523a zebub could be a word-play used in place of זְבוּל zebul meaning prince, habitation or high place. “Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, ‘This fellow does not cast out demons except by Ba`al-zeboob, the ruler of the demons.’” (Matt. 12:24). #G954 Βεελζεβούλ Beelzebub is the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew above.
-17-
(ii) Works
However, “You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind, but shall fear your `Elohiym: for I am Yahuah” (Lev. 19:14). There is a commandment of Yahuah that no one shall cause another to fall. Although this refers to an actual stone in front of a physically blind person, in reality the commandment is telling that it is a sin to put any form of temptation in front of a spiritually ‘blind’ person. If Yahuah was to use an agent to cause others to stumble, He would be breaking one of His own commandments. Nevertheless, although Yahuah Himself puts stumbling-blocks before people, He declares that He is that stumbling-block, “Yahuah Ts`va`ot, He shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offense to both the houses of Yisra`el, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Yerushalayim.” (Isa. 8:13, 14). Therefore, Yahuah does not command haSatan to do His work, but removes His providence to discipline Mankind.
“The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the Kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels.” (Matt. 13:38, 39). In the Parable of the Tares, the Master states that the enemy is the devil. Therefore, the devil cannot be both friend and foe, only foe.
“And it said to Him, ‘All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.’” (Matt. 4:8). The primary aim of haSatan is to replace Yahuah.
“Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.” (Rev. 13:2). The counterfeit deity has established power, a throne and authority in parody of the One Power, Throne and Authority that Yahuah has given to His Son, Yahusha.
“Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.” (Matt. 2:16). HaSatan first tries to kill Yahusha.
“And the devil said to Him, ‘All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.’” (Luke 4:6, 7). Having failed in the attempt on the Master’s life, haSatan tries to induce the Master into false worship in order to rule earth. Again, Yahusha did not question the authority that had been handed to haSatan at the Fall. Having failed in both attempts on the Master’s life, haSatan attack’s Yahuah master creation and greatest love – man, by attacking man. As it cannot be omnipresent the following references usually refer to its demon followers unless in direct conflict with the Master:
(a) “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. It was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in it. When it speaks a lie, it speaks from its own resources, for it is a liar and the father of it.” (John 8:44). HaSatan is a murderer and a liar.
(b) “…and come together again so that haSatan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” (1 Cor. 7:5b). HaSatan is a tempter.
-18-
(c) “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10). HaSatan is a thief, murderer and destroyer. Yahusha’s ministry was in accordance with Father’s will and in direct opposition to haSatan.
(d) “Therefore, we wanted to come to you – even I, Paul, time and again – but haSatan hindered us.” (1 Thess. 2:18). HaSatan opposes Yahuah work and servants. This is done so that frustration and disillusionment creep in to disrupt the work.
(e) “And the the Master said, ‘Shimon, Shimon! Indeed, haSatan has asked for you, that it may sift you as wheat.” (Luke 22:31). HaSatan tries the faith of the Believer to its extremes (cf. Job).
(f) “So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom haSatan has bound – think of it – for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on Shabbat?” (Luke 13:16). HaSatan takes people into bondage by using illness either directly or indirectly to lower resistance or resolve.
(g) “Now after the piece of bread, haSatan entered him. Then Yahusha said to him, ‘What you do, do quickly.’” (John 13:27). Although it would normally be a demon to possess a person, it could well be that haSatan possessed Yehuda (Judas) for this most important event.
(h) “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom it may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8). HaSatan is a destroyer and devourer of souls. It knows its destination and wants to permanently separate man from Yahuah.
Destiny of angels
(i) Good – “Then one of the angels that had seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me saying, ‘Come I will show you the Bride, the Lamb’s Wife.’” (Rev. 21:9). Good angels will be part of the hosts in Heaven with Believers.
(ii) Demons – “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and its angels.’” (Matt. 25:41). Hell was made for haSatan and demons and there they will suffer eternal torment along with non-believers.
“and He cast it into the bottomless pit, and shut it up, and set a seal on it, so that hit should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things it must be released for a little while.” (Rev. 20:3). HaSatan is bound for a thousand years upon the return of the Messiah. “The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” (Rev. 20:10). After being set free for a short time, haSatan is cast into Hell.
“To them (prophets) it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to you, did they minister these things, which now have been announced to you through those who preached the

Good News to you by the Ruach HaQodesh sent out from heaven; which things angels desire to look into.” (1 Peter 1:12). This whole chapter refers to salvation that has been preached to all Mankind symbolized by the letter’s recipients. However, angels can only look upon this process and have no part in it. Salvation is not available to any part of creation, including angels/demons.
What Believers must do
(i) “lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of its devices.” (2 Cor. 2:11). Believers need to be knowledgeable of the work’s of haSatan, hence this study.
(ii) “Therefore, submit to Yahuah. Resist the devil and it will flee from you.” (James 4:7). By being obedient to Yahuah, He draws a Believer close to Him.
(iii) “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom it may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8).
(iv) “Yet Miykha’el the archangel, in contending with the devil, when it disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against it a reviling accusation, but said, ‘Yahuah rebuke you!’” (Jude 1:9). Believers are not to speak lightly of haSatan. However, Man has been made a little below Yahuah `Elohiym (Psa. 8:5) and have been given all authority by the Messiah Yahusha (Mark 13:34; Luke 9:1) so Believers should not be frightened of demons.
(v) “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy it who had the power of death, that is, the devil,” (Heb. 2:14). Believers are to live by faith that the Messiah Yahusha conquered haSatan in His birth, life, ministry, death, resurrection and exaltation.
(vi) “And my `Eloah shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by the Messiah Yahusha.” (Phil. 4:19). Gambling is a form of trying to predict the future for gain. This is wrong for two reasons. The first is that it can draw demonic influences to a person. The second is that it says that Yahuah is not capable of meeting all needs.
(vii) “Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matt. 26:53). Believers can also call upon Father to send angelic assistance through the Messiah Yahusha.
(viii) “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (1 Tim. 6:10). Investing in stocks and shares is not gambling if it is done responsibly. These investments are in fact a person lending a company money and looking for a dividend return. This is the same as receiving interest on a loan. However, it becomes wrong when the pursuit is at the expense of other people.
HaSatan was not defeated at Gulgolta. The fallen angel was defeated at the beginning of time when the plan for Redemption was formulated. It was at Golgotha that the plan was carried out but it will not be until the end of the Millennial Rule that the victory will be made manifest. Believers must look at this perfect example of how Yahuah operates. All too

common (and especially in the area of healing) Believers expect instantaneous results. When Believers do not see instant results, they get down-hearted and doubt comes in to destroy faith. Believers are to accept that once the prayer has been offered up to Father, through Yahusha His Son, haSatan’s attack has been defeated from the beginning of time. The plan was carried out through the faith of the Believer but we must except that the results will be made manifest in Yahuah perfect time.
Yahuah bless you and keep you,
Yahuah make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you,
Yahuah lift up His face toward you and give you peace.
All glory be to Yahuah,
Ameyn.
